The other NBA - the National Book Award - is closely watched by readers, librarians, publishers and booksellers, and the results are generally quite surprising. This year, as has often been the case, the titles selected are mostly relatively obscure: this is not your usual bestseller list.
Two of the finalists for fiction, Lords of Misrule by Jaimy Gordon and I Hotel by Karen Tei Yamashita, are published by small independent publishers. Other finalists include So Much for That by Lionel Shriver, Great House by Nicole Krauss and Parrot and Olivier in America by Peter Carey. Four of the five fiction finalists are women (including Lionel Shriver); most are not very well known. Perhaps the NBA nominations will help you discover a new author to love!

And the winner is...."In something of a surprise, Jaimy Gordon’s novel of women, horses and rinky dink racetracks, Lord of Misrule (McPherson & Co.), won the National Book Award for fiction..." (from PWxyz - Publisher's Weekly blog)
