Potty Poetry

Spring is here and summer is right around the corner. This triggers a little known phenomenon in the library… The absence of all potty training materials on our shelves! Warmer weather seems to motivate parents to start the process of teaching bathroom etiquette to their young. Parents all over Island County suddenly descend upon the library, searching for the magic book that will inspire their toddlers to want to use the toilet and wear “big girl” or “big boy” pants. Fortunately, a lot has been written about this subject.  Here are a few tantalizing titles to put on your holds list in preparation for a summer of potty time success:

Danny Is Done with Diapers: A Potty ABC, by Rebbecca O’Connell
Children with names from Adam to Zach celebrate being diaper free, demonstrating an alphabet’s worth of potty procedures and successes.

Dinosaur is having too much fun to stop and use the potty.  When he starts to do his victory dance, he starts to realize that maybe he is dancing for another reason...

Oh No, Gotta Go! and Oh No, Gotta Go #2, by Susan Middleton Elya
A little girl discovers the wisdom of using the bathroom before taking a ride in the car and that there are some parental suggestions that really do make sense.  These clever stories, which include fun Spanish vocabulary, will resonate with traveling potty users of all ages.

Well-known children’s songs are transformed with silly potty lyrics that will have everyone giggling with irreverence, making potty time a lot more fun!

Everyone, including a few adults I know, can benefit from the wisdom imparted in this charming, yet insightful, book on potty etiquette. Follow a classroom of creatures as they learn how to use their school restroom in a courteous and hygienic manner.

DVD titles:

Elmo’s Potty Time, by the Sesame Workshop - DVD
Sesame Street’s most appealing monster will convince even the most reluctant toddler that learning to use the bathroom is an adventure not to be missed!
